Optimizing Voice over IP and Multimedia Services on GSM/EDGE/UMTS Mobile Stations

This project addresses the challenge of optimising quality performance for real-time packet based multimedia applications, introduced in GSM, EDGE, and UMTS enabled Mobile Devices. For such applications, packet based networks is the cause of impairments due to delay, packet loss, and jitter delay.

Mainly, focus is on VoIP, were previous work has shown, in general, both the need to recognise the time varying nature of perceptual speech importance and the applicability of speech time-scaling. Furthermore, the potential of cross-layer optimisation is recognised to providing a broader rang of quality performance indicators and functionalities for performance optimisation, compared to traditional intra layer optimisation. Given the combined solution space, it is the objective of this project to seek new innovative optimisation methods, compliant with present and future 3GPP standardisation.

In this regard, OPNET plays an important role in development and especially evaluation of these methods.
